Heard the album last night…Bit disappointed to be fair, nothing original, just a bunch of tracks which no doubt will daub gardening programs for years to come. I fear the boards take themselves too seriously, and are just cruising. Return of guitars as per pre-boc maxima but they arent really interesting. I was building this up alot as i did with geogaddi (4 years!) and this (3.5 years!) and I hate to say it’s not worth the wait this time. The thing i hate most is that there is nothing creepy about it, no track (like devil in the details or rue the whirl) which could really upset your average listener. Dont get me wrong, the production, the textures are magnificent, but when it comes down to melody, we’ve heard it before. Peacock tail was perhaps the only track on the album which i would place in their top 30. Everything about the boards now (title, album cover, melodies) seems tired out, yet they seem afraid to upset their listeners with something starkly original. Time for a new band name, and a new challenge.
Hey Matt, are your opinions based on the mish mashed FAKE download thats all over slsk, consisting of some other artist’s work played backwards and all that? Because that does sound like a pretty insipid attempt at BOC. however, there is yet to be a real copy floating around….
just wondering because there are a few people throwing out “i hate boc because they have their own sound and have the audacity to follow their own sound again instead of embracing this year’s sound de jour…”
…and they seem to be based on a fricking fake album! Me, i have faith in this next album, i don’t expect it to be a samba fest with live vocals by some fat diva over grime beats… because thats not what boc do!!!!
Hey remotelocal, I’m 100 percent on the boards album being genuine, my reason being that ‘Oskar see through red-eye’ fits perfectly production-wise with the rest of the tunes, and as the production is as ever ludicrously good, i’m sure it’s genuine. As a boc fan since ‘hi scores’ and a guy who saw them live twice (Lighthouse party- best gig ever) and atp 2001 and dreamt of each gig for months in advance in anticipation, and whose first acid experience was in a field listening to music has the right, I feel i’m not rushing in and being harsh. It’s like i said, it’s a very one dimensional album, which cannot be said for any of their previous works. I think that the boards may be cashing in, and personally, that makes me sad. Sure the songs are chilled, dreamy, beautifully produced etc. But I’m a melody man at heart, and for the standards the boards have built for themselves (among the finest melodicists ever) this falls way short. I appreciate that bands want to hold onto their own sound, but when that’s all they have, I tend to get unhappy. I really wouldn’t have minded them keeping their sound if it had meant great melodies, but as i say, they arent there. The guitar seems too basic when put up against the likes of fourtet, and the songs themselves just seem to meander too much. Compare this to the glory of Pete standing alone, telephasic workshop, eagle in your mind, music is math, julie and candy etc and the only track which gets anywhere near that standard is peacock tail, which i enjoy a hell of a lot.
I was listening to the album with friends the day before my last post, smoked a joint with a nice cuppa (the usual ceremony) and for the first time ever I didnt want to listen to it again straight after, this is unheard of. Sorry to say, but this is a bad review from a HUGE boc fan, not at all rash or without good reason. (my mate loved it though, so, each to their own. Hope you enjoy it.
I also agree with this Matt fellow. BoC’s previous releases were fucking masterpieces and utterly perfect, geogaddi and music has the right to music particularly. So i would say expectations for this new album were just going to be unfair no matter what. I dig the album, and it seems like the duo just knew it was time to chill out by a campfire and make some mellow tunes. The entire album in consistently chill with that perfected production, you can just kind of float through this album without anything hitting you real hard. Here is one thing i’m HIGHLY disappointed with, The drums. It really sounds like they just said “fuck it” and pulled out some drum machine and pushed play, the production on “most” of the drums sound cheap and weak. dayvan cowboy is about the only track that has distinct cool sounding drumming. But all in all, this is by means not their best work at all, I’d have to say maybe their 3rd or 4th best album? something like that, oh well cheers to the campfire headphase anywho. I wont be too bitchy about it, I knew my expecations were lamely high…but it would of been almost unrealistic for the duo to come out with something more mindblowing than geogaddi…i think we needed this mellow camp session from boards to give us a long long long long breather. PREPARE FOR THE NEXT BOC RELEASE IN 2010, FOR IT SHALL MAKE THE EARTH EXPLODE FROM ITS AWESOMENESS. sorry.
just checked back. fair call Matt, i’ve now reviewed it on the shitty little palyback at warp and i’m not entirely blown away either! I’m a huge fan too from way back, everything on CD and Vinyl because i just adore their music, and i can now see how it feels like this falls short… i just hope the record comes with some cool stickers!

Mmmmmmmmmmmm BOC I Love You
Look forward to October 17… :)
Best looking cover yet, I’d say. Maybe best title, too.
I fucking love BoC, don’t get me wrong. But I think the album cover looks too much like MHTRTC.

I agree with Matt 100%.
