Berlin day 2

Our second day, and only full day unfortunatly, started pretty rough because some noisy neighbours woke us up by starting to yell at each other while preparing food. I way lying down with a headache trying to get some sleep, but the floating on my huge air mattress was causing a kind of sea sickness. Having a close encounter with the toilet was not fun at all, but relieved me of those nasty stomach troubles.
Things were getting better though. Having breakfast at Markthalle - pancake with maple syrup and lots of fruit - was a good step in the right direction. We also bumped into dave Tarrida and Neil Landstrumm here, two really nice chaps we of course saw the night before in Tresor.
Going to the Hard Wax record store was another step in the right direction. As we were in Berlin, i decided only to get some Berlin product:

  • Arovane - “Atol Scrap” (DIN) - what happened to the DIN label?
  • Pantytec - “Pony Slaystation” (Perlon) - one of the best album titles ever
  • Monolake - “Momentum” (Monolake) - brilliant darkness
  • Rhythm & Sound - “See Mi Ya” (Burial Mix) - great one-riddim album!!

All these on CD to provide a nice soundtrack for the trip back home the next day. Well, except for the Pantytec CD because Hard Wax only gave me the sleeve for that one by mistake. After an email to the shop the CD arrived yesterday, good service!
After some good old record shopping we went to the Potzdamer Platz area again to see a bit more of the city. Some of the things we saw, in too little time, were a bit of the Berlin wall and the Topographie Of Terror open-air exhibition, Checkpoint Charlie, the Brandenburger Gate, the Sony Center, a freaking expensive Maybach car and lots of rain pouring out of the grey skies. All very impressive, but i really hope i can come back some day to have a better look, with better weather and more time.

After another great and cheap dinner in Kreuzberg, Mexican this time, we had some much needed sleep before we went back to the Tresor. Because of the little nap i felt a lot better than the day before fortunatly and i was better able to enjoy the club. Downstairs a DJ was warming us up with some minimal techno tunes, while in the Globus upstairs French DJ Ark was spreading madness with his funky house records. Good stuff. From Detroit UR representative James Pennington AKA the Suburban Knight was here to celebrate Tresor’s 14th birthday. As expected he did an excellent DJ set with harder but funky techno tracks, including some UR classics of course. The crowd really was into his set and his own classic “The Art Of Stalking” at the end was greeted by lots of cheers. We also went upstairs for a while to check out Stewart Walker’s excellent live set. Smooth techno, with still some rough edges. I must check out more of this guy’s albums because every time i see him i really enjoy his music.
By now it was already time to leave again, so after saying goodbye to every one (Max, Carola, James, the club) we went back to Max’ apartment to have some good sleep this time and to prepare for the trip back home. We had another good breakfast at the Markthalle, where be also met Max again, and had a pretty good trip back to The Netherlands.
John and i had a really great weekend in Berlin. Although it was a little bit short in between two long car drives, we actually did quite a lot. It’s good John already knew Berlin pretty well, which makes it a lot easier to find your way. We will soon post more pictures, including John’s pictures in the club, to the TechnoTourist gallery.
